The Hana Highway was not built for scenery. Convict labour cut the first graded track in 1926, and the paved road that followed in 1962 existed to move sugar, taro and mail to a town the rest of Maui had largely forgotten.
Roughly 620 curves and 59 bridges survive from that engineering, most of them single-lane, many of them poured in reinforced concrete during the 1910s and still carrying traffic a century on.
What the builders treated as an obstacle is now the attraction. The road climbs the windward flank of Haleakalā, where trade winds strike volcanic slope and drop several hundred inches of rain a year at the higher gulches. That rainfall carves the streams the highway crosses: Puohokamoa, Wailua Iki, the stacked pools of Ohe'o Gulch inside Haleakalā National Park. A road to hana tour and helicopter ride reaches both registers of that landscape, the gulch floor and the ridge line, because much of the terrain has no road at all.
The forest itself is layered history. Below Hāna, black sand at Waiʻānapanapa marks a lava flow quenched by surf; above the highway, groves of painted eucalyptus planted for watershed control in the 1920s now shed bark in green and orange strips. Native ʻōhiʻa lehua and hāpuʻu tree fern hold the wetter slopes. Hawaiian settlement here is far older than any of it — Piʻilanihale Heiau at Kahanu Garden, a terraced stone platform covering nearly three acres, is thought to date to the 14th century and ranks among the largest surviving temple structures in Polynesia.
Helicopters entered the picture in the 1980s, when operators found that a rotor could reach the interior valleys of the West Maui Mountains and the upper Hāna rainforest in minutes. From the air the drainage pattern becomes legible: cliffs falling straight to the Pacific, cascades with no trail beneath them, the highway reduced to a grey thread. Ground itineraries and flights answer different questions about the same coast, and road to hana tour and helicopter ride tours are usually assembled to hold the two together — a guided run along Hwy 36/360 with a lift over the terrain the pavement never enters. The highway remains public and free, a working road first and a landmark second.
