Construction of the Hāna Belt Road began in 1900 and did not finish until 1926, and its first purpose was freight: taro, cattle and sugar, not scenery. Crews cut the alignment by hand into the windward cliffs of East Maui, bridging 59 stream gulches, 46 of those crossings still one lane wide.
The route carries roughly 620 curves across some 52 miles. In 2001 the corridor entered the National Register of Historic Places, one of the few American highways listed for its engineering rather than for what sits at the end of it.

Waiʻānapanapa State Park holds a black-sand beach, sea arches and lava tubes formed by flows off Haleakalā. Keʻanae Peninsula is itself a lava delta, farmed in wetland taro for generations. Further east, ʻOheʻo Gulch drops in stepped pools through the Kīpahulu District of Haleakalā National Park. Queen Kaʻahumanu was born at Kaʻuiki Head, above Hāna Bay, around 1768.
That layering explains why the route still matters. The highway remains a public road, open at all hours and carrying no entrance fee, while the parks and gardens along it are separately administered.
